CCTV

An interactive audiovisual installation.

Preface

CCTV is the acronym of ‘Closed Circuit Television,’ used most commonly for security purposes in society. Every day we live with CCTV and sacrifice our privacy, knowingly or unconsciously.

We believe in CCTV as an almost absolute truth, an above-human system literally watching over us. It defines a new urban reality. How do we fit in this panopticonal reality and how do we know if we even exist in it? Does the system register our reality or its own?

Concept

The focus is on interaction: as a visitor you influence directly what you encounter. Your movement in space is used to produce an audiovisual work. You create, together with others, an ongoing and continuously changing composition, visually and musically.

The interactive aspect of the installation generates a temporary but certain dynamic relationship between you and the other visitor. Your presence is mirrored and transformed in image and sound. Entering the space just by yourself, faint noises will suggest the presence of previous visitors. While four images of yourself are being projected, you become more self-conscious during your visit and your interaction with the installation.

Image

CCTV is an interactive audio/video installation with 4 cctv cameras, 4 microphones, 1 computer using customized software, a video and soundcard, 1 quad processor, 1 projector and 4 active loudspeakers. Your movement is registered by four cameras and the sounds you make are recorded with four microphones. The CCTV images contain 'hotspots' which will trigger sounds. All fed into a computer, reworked by software, it is transmitted back into the space.
